Ohio Department of Education Categories for Gifted Identification

Definition:
“Gifted students perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment.”

Superior Cognitive Ability

  • Uses higher-level thinking skills

  • Demonstrates unusually advanced vocabulary

  • Possesses broad knowledge across many topics

  • Quickly masters and recalls factual information

  • Observes keenly

Specific Academic Ability

(Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies)

  • Quickly masters fundamental skills and knowledge in a specific subject

  • Demonstrates sustained interest in academic pursuits

Creative Thinking Ability

  • Approaches problem-solving in unique or unusual ways

  • Generates many alternatives, consequences, or responses

  • Invents unique and original products

Visual and Performing Arts Ability

  • Demonstrates exceptional skill, technique, or sensitivity in visual art, music, dance, or drama

  • Expresses ideas or emotions in artistic forms at a level significantly beyond peers

  • Shows originality and creativity in artistic performance or production

  • Maintains strong focus, persistence, and passion for artistic development
