Changes to District Handbook: Appointments and Vacations
House Bill 410 (HB410) states that schools must report absences in hours, not days. Due to the new legislation, Canton Local Schools can no longer allow a 2-hour window for appointments. Office staff will now time stamp/record all instructional time missed in a regular school day.
Absences for a family vacation will be considered within a school year (August-May), not a calendar year as previously stated in the handbook.
It is important for every Ohio student to attend school every day. Missing too much school has long-term, negative effects, such as lower achievement and lower graduation rates. The Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill 410 last December to encourage and support districts in a preventative approach to excessive absences and truancy.
