Welcome to the Canton Local Teaching & Learning Page
In Canton Local we believe the focus of all school activity is the design of high-quality, engaging work that students find interesting and relevant and that challenges them to reach their highest potential.
Dr. Phil Schlechty states “If student performance is to be improved, there are at least three ways to approach the problem:"
1. work on the students,
2. work on the teachers, or
3. Work On the Work.
As a district, we choose to Work on the Work and believe that by engaging our staff in designing lessons for their students, their students will become more engaged in their learning, which will produce the profound learning that will transfer to wherever they choose to take it after graduation.
Teacher Engagement + Student Engagement = Profound Learning
OIP - Our Belief and Process
The Ohio Department of Education has required all school districts to participate in a researched based process that focuses on what we do as adults in the system and how it effects student achievement. This process refines the work we do everyday and allows us to focus on our beliefs.
We know that all our students have the potential to learn more than they are currently learning, and we believe that the focus of all school activity is the design of high-quality engaging work. We believe that we foster a culture of pride in our schools, created by positive relationships and meaningful work. If we know our students and what motivates them, we can engage them in any subject area.
Because our beliefs drive our vision and mandates, last year we formed a district leadership team that lead this process. This team of teachers and administrators have developed a strategic plan that will improve all students’ achievement levels. We also chose to focus on strengthening positive relationships and our communication with students, parents and the community.
Throughout the process, we have examined multiple questions specific to each grade level and building. These questions and this data formed our focus areas of need. For more details, log onto the Canton Local website for the plan.
